Life in HK

(Old post from MSN space)

Was wondering around in Harbour City yesterday.... a alot of shoppers, mixture of locals and tourists from all over the world. Suddenly, don't know why I am doing there and what I want out of there. A bit sad, a bit missing the life in Auckland. Having been back to Asia (Taiwan/HK) for almost one month now, however most of the time I am either staying at home or with the family going out. Dad thought I am quite unusual compared with before. Maybe. I am still trying to get used to the crowd in Asia, and the different life style here. Honestly, I do miss the simple life in Auckland, miss my dog Charlie, miss my small blue RAV4 and the freedom to drive around, miss the blue sky and the sea, miss.......

Back to Reality

(Originally emailed on 2 Nov 2006)

Dear friends,

I am back to home in full shape after 2 months and 10 days travelling in Europe :) Sorry for not updating the news in time after arriving home - it took me a while to adjust the jet leg plus unpacking the luggages. Finally I am close to finish uploading all the photos to share with you. The invitation will be send by next email and the travel journals are gradually uploaded on my MSN space.

I was watching the movie the other night and can't help not to feel sad when seeing Paris again on screen. I guess not only Paris, all the places I had been over the past two months have been deeply rooted in my mind with beautiful memories. I am truly lucky during the journey - although most of time I am by myself, I seldom feel lonely or helpless. Possibly it's because I am too tired everyday to think about the loneliness, possibly I have not yet met bad people who intend to harm me, possibly I just look like a poor backpacker.....There are too many possibilities, but after the trip, I know I am becoming more positive towards life and myself, and there are too many things waited to be discovered in our short life.

Hopefully you will enjoy the photos thought it might feel like watching the documentary with only scenery, architectures and some strange window displays (I do wish to show you the life adult show in Amsterdam but unfortunately there's no photo allowed to be taken in the red light district :P). There are also subtitles for some photos to have better explanation.

Take care of yourself, and stay in touch,

Ciao,

Travel Journal: Paris - London via Euro Star

15 Oct, Paris - London via Euro Star

Last night was the last night in Paris. I was on the top of the Arc de Triumph looking at the night scene of Paris for the last day. Paris is indeed charming. I feel sad again that I am going to leave this city. Although this time I didn't do much sightseeing, mainly shopping I guess. Arriving Paris last Sunday morning from Zurich, the itinerary of the week is like:

Sun - Flea market, Musee d'Ossey, Centre du Pompadour
Mon - Champee l'Esyee, George V, that's also where I met David & Giogia
Tue - Mufftard Street, Latin Quarter, St. Germain
Wed - Versailles
Thurs - Lafayette, Pritempt
Fri - Marais
Sat - Lafayette, Moutaine

My hand is still hurting because of dragging the very heavy luggage, and my brain isn't really working because of only 6 hours sleep. This is 2 month and 1 week already for my trip in Europe, and honestly I do feel like going home have a nice shower, facial massage, hair treatment and good night sleep.

There are several touching moments on this trip, the first was when I entered the St. Peter's church in Rome, the second was when I was in the Versailles, looking at the ancient architectures and interior decoration. Wishing my parents could also be here to look at the great work. The third is on the last night knowing that I am leaving Paris. Oh, the Lion Memorial in Lucern is also touching. You seem to be able to feel its pain when looking at its face.

The Euro Star is pretty fast, think it's 2 or 3 times faster than the normal train, still feel sleepy...

Travel Journal: Lucern

6 Oct, Lucern

Was concentrated looking at the Lion Memorial until a group of Taiwanese tourists arrive. Feel lucky that I didn't join any Taiwan group to come to Europe. The tour guide is saying something very funny, like the pound in front of the Lion is a "wishing pond", and you can throw two coins to the back (like the fountain in Rome). Gosh, it's the first time I have ever heard the story. At least the Contiki hasn't taught us things that ridiculous.

Throughout the journey, I indeed feel that I am luckier than other people who can't understand English. Although English is still yet not well spoken in many European countries, at least it's more prevailing than Mandarin. You get to know more than being fooled around by nonsense guide.

The Lion does look sad, you can even feel his pain when looking at the statue. I didn't ask anyone to take the photo for me, don't want to become another sad Lion!

Escape in Switzerland

(Originally emailed on 6 Oct 2006)

Hello all,

After a busy life in Milan running between different show rooms and trade fairs with the family, a very Italien life in Vicenza enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and delicious Italien food & wine with my high school classmate, I arrived Lucern Switzerland yesterday and make an escape to small town Zug today which is only 20 minutes train from Lucern. Both Lucern and Zug are beautiful, all have big lakes and stunning mountain views. Compared with Lucern, Zug is an relatively less touristy area. I guess I might be the only Asian tourist there as I have yet seen any others along the way. There is also a cable car going up to Zugberg, where a well-known international boarding school is located and a nice area for hiking and overviewing the whole Zug area. Everytime when I come to Swiss (the fist time is in Aug with Contiki), it always reminds me my another home New Zealand. This kind of the quietness and peacefulness, it's a treasure for me after almost two months continuous traveling.

Nest week I will be in Paris, then London in the following week before heading to Taiwan on the night of 19 October. There are a lot of thoughts wanted to be shared, loads of photos needed to be loaded, packs of luggages waited to be unpacked (including the luggages moved back from New Zealand), and so many thanks to be said to people who had helped me along the journey.

The Internet time is running low now, better to finish before getting cut off. Take care, and speak soon,

Travel Journal: Zug

5 Oct, Zug

Just arrived Lucern from Milan yesterday afternoon. The hostel I stay is just nearby the Lake Lucern. Very beautiful scenery along the lake, like Queenstown in New Zealand. Start missing home.

Today wake up at almost 10am, like the life I am having in Denmark. Decide to come to Zug for half a day trip. Upon arrival to Zug, realised that the school is up in the mountain, need to take bus 11 to the end station on Schonegg, then take the cable car up to Zugerberg, where the Montana Institute is located.

Right now I am sitting in the restaurant just next to the cable car station. It's quiet here, right now the sun is out and the lake view is even more stunning. After almost two months traveling in Europe, it was like first time I don't need to be in a rush, just enjoy the atmosphere and the quietness. It really reminds me home, like the normal Sundays relaxing under the sun. Don't know whether I will have this kind of the life again once I go back to Asia.

Cable car will arrive in another 30 minutes, means I will have another 30 mins to be away/escape from the city life.

Travel Journal: Milano

21 Sep, Fussen - Swan Castle - Munich - Milano
22 Sep, Milano

Another MacDonald breakfast after the night train, guess just don't want to be deceived/cheated by the sneaky Italians again. After travelling around, really don't feel that I like Italy that much, apart from the branded stuff. The service here is bad, people are not that kind, and not safe to travel alone. Germany, on the other hand, seems to be more developed and wealthier than Italy. I guess most of the backpackers might agree so.

Luckily I took the night train with the couchette and sleep through the whole journey (10pm - 6:30am), otherwise my face will really look shitty today. This week is pretty tough, Monday took the night train from Prague to Frankfurt, Wednesday took the romantic road coach from Frankfurt to Fussen (8am - 7pm), yesterday wake up at 6:30am, took the bus at 8am to the castle, finish and come back to the train station at 12pm, took the train to Munich at 1pm, stay in Munich for the Oktoberfest from 4 - 6:30pm, took the night train at 8:56pm and arrive Milano at 7:45am this morning. Don't know how do I make it, but yes, I arrive Milano now. I guess human being's potential is really incredible ^^

Initially was thinking to go to the other castle(s) build by the king, but seems auntie would prefer me to be in Milano during the Fashion Show exhibition. I could only leave Germany and come to Italy. Fortunately the Oktoberfest is fun, but honestly I don't want to stay more than a day there by myself. People are drunk there, and I don't really think it will be ever fun to be hassled by a group of drunken Germany guys.

I was in one of the beer tents taking the photo, and an old guy sitting in the table just in front of me invited me to join them. Yeah, one young German guy sat next to him is cute and I would love to enjoy the Oktoberfest with local people. It's good to enjoy the atmosphere, and initially they are all very nice to me, plus, speak very good English. I could only remember three names now, David, the tall guy sitting opposite to me, a little bit shy, speaking fluent English; Stephen, with attractive eyes, and quite cute and handsome; Willie, the old guy who can't speak English but seems to be a nice uncle. They just keep drinking, flirting and having fun, but later on when I noticed they are having drugs, it's really time to say goodbye because I don't want to get myself into any troubles and miss the train.

Ok, time to wonder around and get back to the hotel waiting for auntie to come back. Ciao.

Back to Western Europe

(Originally emailed on 20 Sep 2006)

Hello,

Just arrived Frankfurt this morning from Praque and will follow the "Romantic Road" tomorrow to Fussen to see the famous Neuschwanstein castle. It´s the first time I took the night train and because I didn´t book any sleeping car or couchette, I ended up sleeping in the normal compartment with my sleeping bag. Finally realised how useful a sleeping bag could be...

Prior to three days in Praque I was in Berlin for four days and it's really a great city to be, combining rich history and modernism. Most of all, the walking tour I had in Berlin was the best I ever have. Initially it was only for 4 hours, but I guess we ended up having almost 5 hours tour and gone through all the major sightseeing spots in Berln with comprehensive background introduction. The guide is passionate about what he is doing, and I think he is a History PHD with Ivy degree. What a gift to us!!

I never expect that much from Berlin but I am havig a great time there. People I met are nice and friendly, and I was even traveling in Praque for three days with an Amercan girl I met during the walking tour. Prauqe is not initially on my itinery because of the safety concern, but I am glad that I make it to come here. It's indeed beautiful, like the mix of Paris and Florance; however people are not generally speaking English and it's funny that you could really sense some sorts of the remaining communism here. It's even prettier in the winter when everything is covered with snow (from the photo I saw), but yeah, it will be damn freezing......

Although I have been traveling in Europe for a while, it's the first time I really stay in a real hostel in Praque, with mixed dorm and open shower place. And today in Frankfurt, the hostel is not far away from the central train station but sort of in the middle of the red light district. I think I will experience more of the different hoste life when I travel further.

I had uploaded some photos on my MSN space (not yet with the subtitle) and if you had added me on your list, you might be able to see that; otherwise just add my MSN and you should be able to access it after the athorisation.

Till then, take good care of yourself.

Travel Journal: Prague

18 Sep

Right now I am sitting in MacDonald, having the Mac Chicken meal before taking the night train to Frankfurt. The lady in the train station is helpful, speaks good English. The young boy in MacDonald is also very helpful, also speaks perfect English. I guess not all Czech are like the shitty people we met over the past two days. Just we shouldn't have expected people to speak our language. They don't need to be.

This MacDonald is not very far away from the train station, 400m away. Luckily I am carrying the luggage, otherwise it will be damn heavy to walk to here with a backpack. Looking out from the window, here is one of the busiest area in Prague, the New Quarter. Many travellers just like us, dragging the luggage, holding the guide book, somewhat look confused. Feel touched, can't believe that I really make it to travel to Europe on my own, travelled many countries, experienced many different things, have so many touching moments, meet many nice people who are willing to help you when you get lost. Yeah, getting lost, this is the most frequent thing happening daily. No matter you speak the local language or not, you just need to find the way out. I don't feel frustrated, instead, sometimes getting lost is good to wonder around, to experiment things which might not happen on the normal journey. I am really glad that I could use English to communicate to people, to be able to understand so many things which are not written in Chinese.

Going to leave Prague, 有點不捨, but don't know what reason. The city is beautiful, especially the river come across the Charles Bridge. In the night time when there's water reflection on the river, along with the church, the palace, all the buildings around, it's indeed pretty, which is not experienced in any other cities I travelled so far. In particular the river is so wide, like the ocean. That will be even nice to come here in the winter time, to feel the "white" miracle.

Another one and half hour I will be on the train to go to Frankfurt. My ticket is only the plain seating one, doesn't include any sleeping car or couchette, and I can't upgrade it. Guess my face will look pretty shitty tomorrow when I arrive Frankfurt.

Need to get ready now, 4 days later I will be in Milan taking a short break, and finally do some really clothing shopping ^^

Second day in Denmark

(Originally emailed on 5 Sep 2006)

Hello,

It's me again and I am in Copenhagen Denmark now. Finished the group tour last Saturday and right now I am totally on my own for further discovery. Luckily the first stop is somewhere I've got a friend and the accomendation is within a very safe and quite place on the East side of Copenhagen.

There're so many things I want to record for this trip and the emails to all of you is the best way of keeping so far. Hopefully you are not 'bombed' by the somewhat sentimental or boring travel diary....

After Munich we went back to Austria again for the water rafting in Tyrol then to a village called Hopfgarten. I've done another challenging thing in my life, that is, paragliding!! On the way to the upper hill of the mountain by the cable car I already started feeling the fear, not to mention that I need to run downhill with a big ''umbrella'' from the edge of the mountain.....It's a nice view from the sky to see the whole village view, and the most challenging thing came after, spin (and double spin) in the air like sitting on rollercoaster! Oh my God....However upon landing I know I've achived another BIG thing, though I am not really sure whether I will do it again or not :P

Not yet fully recovered from the muscle pain accumulated from the water rafting, mountain biking and paragliding in Austria, we are in another beautiful country Switzerland. The place we stayed is in Lauterbrunnen, where we also took the train up to the highest part of Europe Jungfraujoch. Though it's in summer time, it's already snow everywhere and the view is spetacular. It's amazed how Swiss built the tunnel alone the mountain throught the two hour train journey from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch, and of course the sceneary alone the side is no doubt impressive again.

Before our final stop in Amsterdam (yeah the paradise to many young Europeans), we have rested ourselves nicely in Rhine Valley to appreciate the quietness in the small town St. Goar. Although we only stopped by Heidelberg for a very short period of time, it's a very nice town where you will find yourself fall in love with the different atmosphere presented in Germany.

Amsterdam.......well, a non-stop city where you find all sorts of different experience and exicitment no matter at day or night. There's Van Gough museum, Anne Frank's house, relaxing biking or canal ride, there's also legal soft drugs, 'populated' red light district with many appealing sex shows (window or in house). We did go to see one of the live porn shows and few of the guys on our group had also been invited to participate....... it's more of the amusement than turning-on :)

I've never lived so closely with so many young Europeans, from day to night, from breakfast to the late night drinks. Apprantely my grey hairs become less after the tour, though I know I always look pal due to the lack of sleep which is most needed for people at my age >.<

If I am lucky enough to book the ticket, I will be on an overnight cruise to Noway tomorrow afternoon. Keep finger crossed and will update more in the near future.

Take care,

Travel Journal: Rhine Valley (St. Goar) to Amsterdam

31 Aug, Rhine Valley (St. Goar) to Amsterdam

After staying in Munich for one night and one half day, we drove to Austria Tyrol for water rafting. On the boat we have Louis, Ale, David, Ally, Stacy, Magumi and myself. The water is alright, but because I got a hole in my wet suit, I feel so damn freezing when our guide asked us to jump into the water. I guess I am just too focused on not to fall into the water and forget to appreciate the beautiful scenery aside the river.

After this, we drove to Hofgargen, a small town famous for the winter skiing. We went mountain biking in the morning and had the paragliding in the afternoon. I haven't done mountain bike for almost 8 years, and my butt really hurts. The scenery is beautiful and the riding is enjoyable, although we do occasionally got the shower alone the way. Honestly I don't think I am the person who will try paragliding, but every time when I am in overseas, I tend to become more "brave" than I used to be. Yes, I did try the paragliding. We took the cable car to the upper hill and we need to be attached to a big "umbrella" and run from the hill. Not very long after I start running, we are already in the air. The coach is right behind me, but still, it's scared. I couldn't help to hold the bars very tightly...

Travel Journal: Vienna to Munich

25 Aug, Vienna to Munich

After a pleasant day and night (we had Viennese dinner in woods, the food is good and the atmosphere is great. everyone enjoys a great time there), we went to a concentration camp in Mauthausen, Austria this morning. It was sad to see the history and how human lives are tortured in this camp. Behind the beautiful scenery of Austria, there are also lessons for us to remember, to respect each individuals regardless of their nationality, minority whatsoever.

Vienna is a beautiful city, we went to the Mozart concert on the night we arrive on 23 Aug. Compared with what I used to hear in 光仁, the orchestra is not big (only 6 or 7 people), but in a classical atmosphere like Vienna, it seems like a must to attend one of the concerts like this.

Yesterday is a free day in Vienna, we started the walking tour in the Royal Palace and finish in one of the main shopping street. Afterwards I went checking out the Cathedral, the Theatre, have the lunch in the open market, Parliament House, the park, Mozart Statue, the Opera House, took a lot of photos and then again stuck in the other major shopping street again from 2:30 to 5. I am a hopeless shopholic. The dinner was great, the farmer plate I ordered is delicious, and the host is a really fun Austrian guy. Not until I receive a very rude message from the fucking asshole, I think my stay in Vienna will be very memorable. He really knows how to ruin other people's good mood. Anyway I also hope that I could find a good guy to move on with my life to forget this asshole. Nothing worse than trying to be nice and people treat you like shit.

Hello from Munich

(Originally emailed on 25 Aug 2006)

Hello,

Thanks for your emails and apology that I might not be able to reply individually but on the gorup base due to the limited time on the Internet. We just depart Vienna this morning and arrive Munich this afternoon. Half an hour later will be off to the local beer hall and check out the Munich city centre.

Vienne is a nice city, very classcial with clear street and less tourist. On the night of arrival we also went to the Mozart concert and enjoyed a great night out. Compared with the "chaos" in Italy, Austria and Germany has higher living standard as well as better order. You also get to see a lot of nice cars running on the road. Have never seen so many X5 on the road.......

On the way to Munich we also went to see a concerntration camp near the outskirt of Austria. Behind the beautiful scenary, there're sad historical stories behind and none of us would like to see it happen again. It's kinda depressed after a big contract with what we feel in Vienna.

If I have missed anyone on the email list, please feel free to forward it. I am still trying to configue how to decode the language to something I could recognise.....Till then, take good care.

By for now,

Travel Journal: Venice to Vienna

23 Aug, Venice to Vienna

This morning we cross the border of Italy and come to Austria. The first service station we stopped is amazing, nice food, clear toilet, no crazy crowd like Italy, feel like we're finally in a more civilized country.

Over the past one week, we have been to Florance (1 night and 1 full day), Rome (1.5 days) and Venice (1 night and 1 full day). Not very impressed with Florance, it's a small town compared with Rome, and I had my worse Italy food and ice cream (cost me 12 Euro, damn) in Florance. Maybe if I get the chance to see the Uffizi Museum, the impression will be better.

Rome is really the capital of the Empire, so many great buildings/architectures/heritages. We went around the city on the first day we arrive, oh, forget, we actually had a very morning departure from Florance and arrive Rome before 11am. Straight into Vatican Museum after getting off the bus. The line is unbelievable long, we "sneak in" so that it will get us to go into the museum as soon as possible. Not to mention all the great collections in the museum like all the others, the Sistine Chapel is really a master piece, you could just look at the ceiling for hours to appreciate how Michelangelo accomplishes those great paintings. I spend over half an hour in the Chapel just listen to the audio guidelines and look at all those great paintings around.

During the lunch time I shared an table with two Australians who are currently living in UK but is backpacking for 6 weeks. Start feeling that I am really doing the trip on my own now. The next day is a free day, start with the guided tour of the Colosseum, understand the history behind that, went to the Roman Forum, then later we went to the Capuchin Monks Church, all decorated with skeletons. I didn't go to the catabomb in Paris so decide need to have a look in this one even though I didn't expect too much cos of the scary feeling. However it turns out pretty good. Was fun to go there with a group of people and laugh at each other in the skeleton church!

The day in Rome is so full on. I finish most of the sightseeing I want to do, done good shopping on the Corso Street. Most important of all, I saw the St. Peter's church. Initially Ange told us the church is closed becos of the service, but I still want to have a look even though from outside. It will be a real pity not to see the biggest church on the world, so I manage to get off the Metro on the way back to the campsite, and to my great surprise, the church is open! I can't believe how lucky I am, otherwise I will definitely come back to Rome to see the church (like the wish I made in the Trevi Fountain). When I stepped into the church, I can't stop crying. I guess it's because I am too happy to get to see the church, also it's so big and magnificent. Someone is doing the service in the 祭壇, and the whole church design is also overwhelming. I went back to the campsite at almost 8:30, no dinner, sore legs, tired, but everything is just so worthwhile.

The night before we arrive Venice, enjoyed a very Italian style night life in the camp club. Italians are very easy to take off their pants (it reminds me of someone, haha) but it was a great fun to hook up with the people on the tour and enjoy the time over the drinks. I have been sick since the early start of the tour and haven't been really out partying for a while. Yesterday we went to Venice by boat from the campsite. On the way to the main island, I know why people will fall in love with Italy. Venice is an adorable city, surrounded by water (though it's not very clean), a lot of old streets, and you do get lost very easily, because for some buildings you think are close, they might need to across the river or swimming! I only done the church thing in the morning, the rest of day just wonder (or shop) around. The Marino glass is beautiful, but very expensive and fragile to ship home. Mum and Dad will get crazy here.

We went to the Gondola ride in the afternoon, it's so quiet and peaceful in some of the small streets, just see the water flowing on the side then enjoy the moment. No wonder it's a romantic city for people to fall in love. Louis also proposes to Alex on the gondola, such a romantic thing to do in Venice. Survive in Italy, no pick pocket, not getting lost in the train station. Bravo!

Ciao from Italy

(Originally emailed on 22 Aug 2006)

Hello friends,

I am in Venice now, and will be leaving for Vienna tomorrow. The trip is awesome so far, around 50 people on the tour from New Zealand, Australia, US, Canada, Brazil, Japan etc. We have been to Paris, French Riviera, Barcelona, Nice/Cannes, Monaco, Florance, Rome, seen a lot a great architectures, museums, people, scenary....walking a lot everyday because time is just too short to want to see everything within a short period of time. I have tried to upload the photos but seems the number is way too big for the bandwidth, might try to do it later on when I finish the tour and go to Denmark in September.

The most impressive things for me to date is the Louvre in Paris, the Ventican Museum (Sistine Chapel), St Peter's Church in Rome. Initialy I did't expect the St. Peter's church will be opened due to the Sunday service, but when I did get into and realise the church is open, I almost cry....partially it's because I won't have the pity in Rome, partially it's also because it's so huge and so impressive that you almost hold your breath when looking around.

Ok, my time is up now. Will share with you more when I got time. Take care,

Travel Journal: Dover, across Tunnel to France

9 Aug, Dover, across Tunnel to France

Will be interesting to find out more in the remaining 24 days. Nothing much for today's tour, mainly will be sitting on the tour bus. We will arrive Paris in the late evening to find out more about this romantic (??) city :)

Still waiting for the ferry crossing in Dover. We might need to sail on the sea for 1.5 - 2 hours before reaching France, then another 2 - 2.5 hours to the camp site we stay.

Travel Journal: Taipei - Bangkok - London

8 Aug, Taipei - Bangkok - London

Leaving

(Old post from MSN space)

I've confirmed my last day at work will be 16th June, which means in a week time I will be out of New Zealand and start the travel journey.

8 years ago, I also arrived the Auckland airport in late June. Time flies....That's where I come from, and that's where I am going to depart.

I start feeling sentimental now, and nervous. Can't image what will be like on the departure date neither what will be happening in the next couple of months after jumping out from the current comfort zone.

Since the decision has been made, I could only look forward, not look back. Good luck to myself.

OE

(Old post from MSN space)

Finally manage to put together all the required information and submit my UK working holiday visa application today. Normally the process will take around 6 - 8 weeks and hopefully I will get the approval to fulfill the Europe dream :)

This month is going to be tough for me - need to finish the current project, need to do a proper handover to other people at work, need to pack, book the ticket, arrange the trip, need to convert all (or most) of my NZD assets, need to organise the farewell party, need to..............get ready for the unknown move...

It's mixed feeling to leave NZ for an uncertain period. From the dislike stage, to the get-used-to stage, and to the semi-home stage, it takes me almost eight years to be like a kiwi. My home and family is still in Taiwan, while I am just not sure how well I could adopt to the environment again....Anyway, putting those unknown things aside, I am going to be in another totally different country (or you could say continent) to start a new life adventure. Just give it go...like most of the kiwis say...because you will never know what awaits you there! That's the only motivation I've got now.
